SIGNED THE DAY AFTER LINCOLN'S ELECTION TO A SECOND TERM
"Let this boy take the oath of Dec. 8 1863 and be discharged." Written the day before his election to a second term, Lincoln orders the release of a prisoner pursuant to his Presidential Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction of 8 December, which provided that any confederate might have all his property (excluding slaves) restored to him upon taking an oath of allegiance to the United States. Lincoln issued many orders for the release of prisoners with this condition.
