"Governor Buckingham of Connecticut] would like a Brevet for Gen. Birge & I would like it if not inconvenient."

Henry Warner Birge was on the staff of Governor Buckingham of Connecticut at the beginning of the war and helped organize that state's first regiment. He entered the army with the rank of Major in May of 1861, in command of the 13th Connecticut Infantry. He took part in the seizure of New Orleans, Port Hudson, was promoted to Colonel and later Brigadier General, served in the Carolinas and Georgia, leaving the army on 18 October 1865. The state legislature of Connecticut awarded Birge a Vote of Thanks and he was breveted Major General on 25 February, the very day after this request.
