[LINCOLN ASSOCIATES]. BERRY, WILLIAM FRANKLIN, Partner in Lincoln-Berry store in New Salem. Partly printed document signed ("W. F. Berry") on verso, Springfield, Illinois, 7 November 1834. 12mo, 2 pages, cleanly torn along central fold. A summons signed by Sheriff C.R. Matheny, for four men to appear as witnesses in a case before the Circuit Court in Springfield; on the verso Berry certifies that the individuals in question have been served with the summons. VERY RARE. Documents signed by Berry (1811-1835) Lincoln's partner in the New Salem store, are very rare in the market. The store ran heavily into debt and in April 1833 Lincoln resold his share to Berry, who died in 1835, but creditors seized Lincoln's horse and surveying instruments. Lincoln was still paying these debts in the 1840s.
