A dramatic anti-copperhead propaganda poster (a legend at bottom reads "Please Post This Up) graced by a large (11¾ x 15½ in.) wood-engraving after Thomas Nast. The illustration shows a crippled Union soldier, head bowed in despair, shaking hands with a resolute Confederate officer brandishing a whip. Between them is a tombstone labelled "In Memory of our Union Heroes who fell in a Useless War." The text is addressed to the "Citizens of Indiana," and appeals to them not to heed the Copperhead, anti-war politicians. It lists the very harsh "Conditions of Peace" proposed by a Richmond paper, and urges them to suuport the Union cause: "Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and Inseparable."
Apparently distributed by a Republican organization supporting the re-election of President Lincoln. The Democratic platform condemned the war, called for a cessation of hostilities and a negotiated settlement. Indiana was a center of support for the Democrats.
