Gotch was a portrait, landscape and genre painter who studied at Heatherley's, Antwerp, the Slade and Paris. He first visited Newlyn, Cornwall in 1879, but lived in London until 1887. He was a founder of the 'Newlyn School' with Stanhope Forbes and Walter Langley
