Lot Essay

After the drama of the earlier Revelation subjects, this watercolour of 1912, the last of those inspired by the book to be acquired by Osmaston, presents an image of peace and serenity. The devil has been defeated and St John sees a vision of 'a new heaven and a new earth... And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people... And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying...' (ch.21, vs. 1-4). It may well have been a conscious decision, on the part of either the artist or his patron, to close the series on this beatific note
