This is a version of the picture that Blair Leighton exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1915 (no.687).

St. Elizabeth (1207-1231) was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, and married Louis, Landgrave of Thuringia. The composition shows her distributing bread to the poor during the famine of 1226.
