Lot Essay

A drawing for plate 20 of Jardine's Naturalist's Library, vol.XVIII of the 1843 collected edition, first published in vol.VI of Ornithology in 1836: 'Blue-Bellied Lorikeet/Tricholglossus Swainsonii'. Lizars' engraving adds a landscape background and alters the smaller branches. According to Selby 'this beautiful species is a native of New Holland'; it feeds on eucalyptus but not grain 'even in a domesticated state...It appears that they seldom live long in confinement, and that when caged they are very subject to fits...Mr Lear's beautiful and accurate figure renders it almost unneccessary to give a description of the plumage; but as the bird has so frequently been confused with two other species, it may perhaps be satisfactory to some of our readers and give it in detail...'
