London, 1659, maker's mark HB conjoined with a mullet below, the cover unmarked

Circular and with cast female mask and foliate scroll handles, chased with a band of stylised fruits and foliage, the detachable cover with spreading circular foot finial and, similarly chased, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms, the cover with a crest, marked on rim - 6 1/3in. (16.5cm.) high
29ozs. (932grs.)

The arms are those of Howarth impaling Masters for Thomas Howarth Esq. of the Whitehouse, Vowchurch, Co. Herefordshire and his wife Mary, daughter of Herbert Masters of Burghill, Co. Herefordshire. The arms were both registered at the Heralds visitations of Herefordshire in 1683.

In a letter of the 12th of July 1944 to Lady Wills, Commander How refers to this piece

'Prices were very low at Christie's today, as I rather thought they might be due to the present 'blitz', and we got the porringer for you for #250 which pleased us enormously. I very much hope you will be pleased with it when you get it. It certainly is a good addition to the collection and perhaps someday we will find a salver on foot for it to sit on. The form with the footed lid is a very rare one and one of which I am particularly fond'
