SECTION SEVEN: QUINTA DO NOVAL, AND QUINTA DO NOVAL, NACIONAL
Quinta do Noval is one of the historically great names of the Port trade, and was purchased by AXA - Millesimés in 1983, bringing to an end 100 years of ownership by the da Silva and van Zeller families.
AXA have appointed a new managing director, Christian Seely, and have commenced a very significant investment programme, with the construction of a winery featuring fully-automated temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, and a programme of replanting much of the vineyard with the major indigenous grape varieties.
If Quinta do Noval is synoymous with great port, then wines produced from the three hectare plot of ungrafted vines Quinta do Noval, Nacional represents the pinnacle. Produced in tiny quantities (c. 300 cases per annum against 6,000 cases of vintage) is consistently achieve the highest prices for any port in a given vintage. It is characterised by unusually deep colour and a magnificent concentration of fruit.
It is quite unique to be able to offer such a broad span of vintages, and especially to be able to acquire them from such perfect provenance.
