SECTION ELEVEN: CHATEAU PETIT-VILLAGE, AND OTHER RIGHT-BANK PROPERTIES?C
Château Petit-Village is a tiny 11-hectare estate in the commune of Pomerol, and is flanked by Vieux Château Certan, Certan de May, La Conseillante and Beauregard. Its reputation equals the best of Pomerols.
During the span of vintages represented here, it has belonged to three names synonymous with top-quality Bordeaux: 1919 to 1971, Ginestet; 1971 to 1988, Domaine Prats (owners of Château Cos d'Estournel); and 1989 onwards, AXA - Millesimés.
The encepagement is typically right-bank: 80 Merlot, 10 Cabernet Franc and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon. The tiny production of roughly 5,000 cases per annum is fiercely sought after, and it is rare to come across older vintages, let alone directly from the château cellars.
Châteaux Franc-Mayne, La Fleur-Pourret and Petit-Figeac are all small, good quality Saint-Emilion, owned by AXA and whose wines are vinified by the same technical team. Franc-Mayne can be considered AXA's starting point, being the château that they purchased first of all in 1984.
