These cabinets were part of a collection of furniture and decorations commissioned from Gropius by the banker Dr. Karl Hertzfeld of Hanover, in 1913, immediately following his marriage in 1912.

A large cabinet with drawers, designed en suite with the above and from the same Hertzfeld family source is now in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, having been previously exhibited at the Deutsche Werkbund Ausstellung, Kölnischer Kunstverein, 1984
