Lot Essay

Compared to some of the concoctions illustrated in Matthias Lock and Henry Copland's New Book of Ornaments of 1752 or Thomas Johnson's Collection of Designs of 1758 these girandoles are models of restraints. These are particularly unusual for being entirely foliate without any Chinese or architectural motif at all.
