Lot Essay

This drawing has traditionally been described as showing the Library at Thirlestaine House (see lot 4 opposite), but the catalogues of that house indicate several paintings in the library. Thirlestaine was not a family house, but a showplace and this room has an intimate and well-used air, while being of considerable grandeur. The overmantel looking glass seems to reflect another similar one on the other side of the room
