Lot Essay

This drawing, by the same hand as the view through a window at Compton Verney (lot 8), shows a vista down an enfilade of eighteenth century panelled rooms, possibly at Aldborough Hall in Yorkshire. The village of Aldborough was distinguished by the exceptionally rich Roman remains found in the locality. Many of the cottages were built over fragments of mosaic floor and the inhabitants were able to charge visitors to look at them, usually for a fee of 6d.
