Lot Essay

The pilasters suggest a seventeenth century room, embellished in the eighteenth century with a carved rococo chimneypiece. The chair is in the Regency style. The miscellaneous furnishings of this fine room suggest an academic's study, possibly in a college at one of the Oxbridge universities. The style of drawing is close to William Henry Hunt (1790-1864), being executed in a painterly and atmospheric manner, which is combined with precision and detail (see lot 32)
