An Album of Watercolours including Interiors comprising Tresco Abbey Isles of Scilly; New Rooms at Tresco Abbey Isles of Scilly; State Room Tresco Abbey; Audley End; and the Sitting Room in Brownlow's Cottage at Nevill Holt the majority inscribed, some numbered and the majority dated variously 1859-1879,29 watercolours and 1 lithograph, the majority pencil and watercolour, one pencil pen and black ink and watercolour, one pencil only 10½ x 16in. (267 x 409mm.); and smaller; the album 13½ x 17¾in. (343 x 451mm.) overall

Lot Essay

One of the items in the album is a botanical print by Tower. Publication on however limited a scale suggests a degree of professional association. Sophia Tower may have made illustrations for botanical publications or periodicals just beginning to proliferate at this date.

The building of the modern Abbey was begun by the Lord Proprietor, Augustus Smith in 1831, but the main part of the construction took place from 1841 and the tower was added in 1891. Tresco Abbey is surrounded by magnificent sub-tropical gardens
