William Chambers designed this fine Palladian mansion, 1764-79, for Lord Gower, the Marquis of Stafford. The Marquis died in 1803 and the lease was sold to Lord Carrington. The lease expired in 1885 and the house was demolished in 1886, but the staircase hall is recorded in a photograph by Bedford Lemere in the collection of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments
