Probably a study for the Salon painting of 1878, Antibes. La Promenade à Cheval (see the catalogue of the exhibition, Ernst Meissonier, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, 25 March-27 June 1993, p. 150, no. 74 (illus.)), now in the Musée d'Orsay, in which the rider, Charles Meissonier (1848-1917), the artist's son, is portrayed at his father's side. The same horse occurs again in Un Général et son aide-de-camp of 1879 (op. cit., p. 199, fig. 7 (illus.) (New York Metropolitan Museum) and Le Guide of 1874 (ibid.), p. 199, fig. 8. (illus.) (Yale University Art Gallery).
