Lot Essay

Frère first visited Egypt circa 1853. Though he was based mainly in Paris, Frère had a studio in Cairo and received the title of 'bey' from the Egyptian government. Probably his last trip to Egypt was with the Empress Eugènie during the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869.
