Lot Essay

Influenced by Delacroix, Decamps and Marilhat, Fromentin first visited Algeria in 1846. He returned in September 1847 for eight months visiting Constantine and Biskra and again in 1852, staying for a year in Mustapha and Blidah. In 1856 his illustrated travel notes were published under the titles Un Été dans le Sahara and Une Année dans le Sahel.
