Lot Essay

Guillaume Meyer exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1847 and painted primarily views of Venice and spanish monuments.

An old label on the reverse of the picture indicates a delivery date of 9 March 1848 (no. 439, p. 54) to Schloss Rosenstein. King Wilhelm's interest in the orient inspired him to commission die Wilhelma, an oriental style Schloss and garden built by Karl Ludwig von Zanth in the grounds of Schloss Rosenstein between 1842 and 1851. This probably encouraged the King to collect pictures of oriental subjects, in particular views of the Alhambra, such as our picture.
