Helen Bradley (1900-1979)
May Day
signed lower right with a fly, oil on canvas-board
15¼ x 19¼in. (38.8 x 48.9cm.)
signed, dated and inscribed on a label attached the backboard MayDay was on a Monday Morning. We met Miss Carter, who wore Pink, talking to Miss Matthews. Mr Taylor, the Bank Manager was also taking a walk. The year was 1907. Helen Layfield Bradley (1966), inscribed again on another label attached to the backboard George and I always had to walk quietly behind Mother, Grandma, The Aunts and Miss Carter (who wore pink), I quite enjoyed our walk along Spring Lane because Miss Carter wore a 'New Hat', She also had on a new dress which she said was an exact copy of the one worn by Queen Alexandra when she came to Manchester. Only of course it was Pink and the Queen's wasn't, but her hat was something quite new, Aunt Frances said it was strips of ribbon stitched together and perched at the back was a bird with beautiful plumes which waved in the gentle breeze and the year was 1907
