An illustration of the Miracle of Capernaeum, Luke 5: 17-20. In common with other religious paintings of the 1920s the events take place at Cookham and the paralytic is being lowered through the roof of Spencer's next-door neighbours, at The Nest. The ladders belong to Fairchild, the Cookham builder (see K. Bell, loc. cit.)
