Lot Essay

A portrait of the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939). John began to sculpt in the early 1950s after meeting the Italian sculptress, Fiore de Henriques. This portrait was sculpted from photographs of John's earlier pictures of Yeats, and was intended as an edition of eight, but only three casts were made. Another cast of the portrait of the young Yeats was unveiled at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in November 1956
