2° (463 x 365mm). 22 tipped-in chromolithographed plates, finished by hand, by J.G.Keulemans after H.Leutemann and Keulemans, illustrations, extra-illustrated with two photographs of young Crowned Cranes tipped onto the margin of plate XV. Original pictorial green cloth gilt (extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: Major Maurice Portal.

FIRST EDITION. LIMITED EDITION. Number 15 of 170 copies of 'a handsome, useful, and basic work, being on e of the two major monographs of the Griudae' (Mengel). 15 of the species figured were drawn from life in 1872 at the Amsterdam Zoo by Heinrich Leuteman under the direction of G.F.Westerman, the Director and Founder of the Zoo. Westerman conceived the idea of publishing a monograph on the Crane family - his death in 1890 prevented him from carrying out his plan.
