4° (320 x 242mm). Title, dedication, 61 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES by J.G. Keulemans, 4 chromolithographic maps by George Philip and son, illustrations in the text. (Occasional very light finger-soiling.) Original publisher's brown cloth gilt, in protective plastic wrapper, largely unopened and uncut (hinges slightly cracked but still firm, extremities rubbed).

FIRST EDITION of this "thorough treatise . . . with excellent, hand-coloured plates" (Zimmer). Mivart follows the classification laid down by Count Salavdori in his volume on the Parrots in the "catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum", and examined specimens from all over Europe in order to compile his descriptions. Richard Bowdler Sharpe supervised the making of each plate, in order "to ensure its fidelity to nature" (Preface). Zimmer p. 439; Nissen IVB 640; Fine Bird Books p. 94.
