ROBINSON, Herbert C., Frederick N. CHASEN, Lord MEDWAY and David R. WELLS. The Birds of the Malay Peninsula. A general account of the birds inhabiting the region from the isthmus of Kra to Singapore with the adjacent islands. London: H.F. and G. Witherby, 1927-1939, and 1976.
5 volumes, 8° (273 x 185mm). 125 plates after H. Grönvold, all but two printed in colour, line maps of Malaysia, Cambodia and Sumatra and nearby islands, including one in colour in vol. V. (Light spotting to fore-edges of vols. I-IV, not affecting pages.) Original red cloth, lettered in gilt.
FIRST EDITION of this comprehensive work on the birds of the Malay Peninsula. H.C. Robinson was responsible for the first two volumes and part of the third, but died in 1929. The rest of the work, up to volume IV was completed by Chasen. Volume V had been planned by Chasen, but the work was interrupted by the outbreak of the war in Southeast Asia in 1941, in which Chasen was killed. His manuscripts were lost with him, but the plates, prepared by Grönvold under Chasen's direction, had been deposited at the Bird Room of the British Museum. Several versions of text for volume V were prepared, from the 1940s until 1973, when the present text, by Lord Medway and D.R. Wells, was completed, and finally combined with the original plates. Nissen IVB 791 (vols. I-IV only, requiring 101 plates). (5)
