SEEBOHM, Henry (1832-1895). The Geographical Distribution of the Family Charadriidae or the Plovers, Sandpipers, Snipes and their allies. London and Manchester: Henry Sotheran & Co., [1887].
4° (320 x247mm). Title with wood-engraved vignette by J.G. Millais, 21 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES by J.G. Keulemans, printed mainly by Hanhart, 265 wood-engraved figures, including vignettes, maps and ornaments, by J.G. Millais and others in the text. (Title, frontispiece and a few leaves of index with one or two light spots.) Original green pebble-grained cloth, titled in gilt on spine and front cover (one or two slight scuffs). Provenance: Geoffrey Hignett (inscription dated 1899).
FIRST EDITION of this important monograph of the shore birds of the world. According to Zimmer, "the work met with a varied reception owing to the debatable character of many of the author's views on classification, but it is, nevertheless, a valuable repository of information on the subject." The work is based on the collections of James E. Harting, Shelley and Swinhoe, subsequently acquired by the author and finally presented by him to the British Museum. Seebohm also acknowledges his debt to Harting's manuscript notes, which the latter had intended to use as a basis for his own monograph on the same subject. Keuleman's plates illustrate species which had previously been only poorly illustrated or entirely unillustrated. Zimmer pp.568-9 ("The hand-colored plates are excellent"); Nissen IVB 850; Anker 455; Fine Bird Books p. 106.
