LINDEN, John Jules and Lucien, E. RODIGAS and R.A. ROLFE. Lindenia. Iconography of Orchids. Brussels and Ghent: E. Vanderhaeghen of Ghent for Lucien Linden, February 1891-January 1892, August 1893-July 1894, and August 1896-July 1897.
Parts I-XII, XXXI-XLII and LXVII-LXXVIII only (of 78) in 31, 2° (368 x 280mm). 6 volume titles, half-titles and tables of contents (for volumes I, II, VI, VII, XII and XIII), 142 FINE CHROMOLITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, including 2 double-page, by P. de Pannemaeker and J. Goffart after A. Goossens, J. de Bosschere, G. Meunier, G. Putzys and G. Severeyns. (Slight offsetting onto tissue guards, occasional light marginal finger soiling.) Original pink and blue printed paper wrappers (part VI with damage to back cover, a few parts rubbed at spine, occasional light soiling).
A clean selection of parts, preserved in their original wrappers, from one of the most ambitious and widely-circulated orchid periodicals. The English edition began publication in 1891, after the success of the French edition, and uses the plates and descriptions (translated into English by J. Weathers) from the second half of volume VI and volumes VII-XII of the French edition. The two editions were published concurrently, until the English edition ceased publication in 1897. The present series has parts I and VII-XII from the English edition, but parts II-VI from the rare American edition, which is unrecorded in bibliographies. Although the descriptive text of the two English-language editions was probably identical, the wrappers of the American edition (printed on blue paper, rather then pink, as the English edition), give the subscription price in dollars, and differ slightly in their method of setting out the contents of each part. By 1893, the two English-language editions had been amalgamated: the wrapper to part XXXI does not specify the nationality of the edition and gives subscription prices in shillings and dollars. The present series lacks the parts to form volumes III-V and VIII-XI. Cf. Nissen BBI 2348; Stafleu & Cowan 4628 (mistakenly giving the date of the final part as July 1898); Great Flower Books p. 85. (31)
