ATLAS - Johannes Franciscus van ESSEN. Atlas ofte Werelt Beschryvinghe. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER, in Dutch. [i.e. Description of the Earth's Globe, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, made by Johannes Franciscus van Essen, notary to his Imperial Majesty and to the Holy See at Rome.] Presented to the Biblioteeck der Getrouwde Sodalityt t'Antwerpen [Library of the Married Confraternity in Antwerp] 28 September 1739. In Antwerpen: 8 September, 1739.
Oblong 2° (183 x 290mm). 360 leaves, including a preliminary leaf with hemisphere and volvelle, two title pages, 221 FINELY DRAWN MAPS, 15 folding, 2 plans and many pages containing about 400 coloured painted armorials (a few others unfinished), sheets partly on guards. Text and maps in brown ink, (printed map of South America inserted), Van Essen of Brabant arms on verso of title. Contemporary brown calf, spine gilt (binding very worn, but contents in excellent condition).
A remarkably fine and detailed manuscript atlas, presumably based and adapted from contemporary atlases. Following the map of the world, the arrangement is by countries for Europe, comprising Britain and Ireland (9 maps), Spain and Portugal (11 maps), France (17 maps), Channel Islands (1 map), Netherland and Flanders (15 maps, 2 plans), Northern Europe and Scandinavia (11 maps), Russia (10 maps), Poland (3 maps), Balkans and Hungary (7 maps), Austria and Bohemia (5 maps), Switzerland (2 maps), Germany (14 maps), Italy (26 maps), Malta (2 maps), Greece and Cyprus (14 maps). Asia and the Pacific has 30 maps, America 15 maps, 'Magellanica' 5 maps and 'Australia' 3 maps. The arrangement of the provinces is sometimes confused, mostly in line with the political situation of the period. The descriptions are accompanied by numerous painted coats of arms for countries, towns and provinces.
