ERNEST II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. -- KRETSCHMER, Robert (1818-1872). Reise des Herzogs Ernst von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, nach Aegypten und den Landern der Habab Mensa und Bogos. Leipzig: J.G.Bach, [1864 or later].
2° (454 x 380mm). Title and 20 mounted plates only (lacking one leaf with 2 maps and a second leaf with 4 photographs of drawings), chromolithographed throughout with titling in manuscript and occasional touches of hand-colouring, all by Kretschmer. (Small tears to title and 12 plates, some spotting or soiling to mounts.) Unbound in contemporary portfolio (worn).
Kretschmer travelled as a member of Duke Ernest's entourage during the latter's tour of Egypt and Ethiopia. The illustrations display a certain amount of anecdotal humour (cf. the title: a donkey tries to buck-off its topied rider). Ernest was the elder brother of Albert, Prince Consort; he married in 1842; succeded his father, Ernest I, in 1844 and died in 1893. The title of the work calls for 4 photographs and 2 maps, the BL copy has a variant, dated 1864 and complete with only 20 plates.
