Columbier 2° (595 x 430mm). 3pp. subscriber's list, and 1p. advertisment of Sir William C. Harris's Works. Lithographed additional title with hand-coloured vignette, 30 hand-coloured plates by Harris, 30 lithographed vignette illustrations. (Neatly repaired tears to additional title and plates 19, 26, 27 and seven text leaves, plate 28 with 15mm tear to lower margin.) Modern deep-burgundy half calf, spine gilt with green morocco lettering-piece.

Large paper issue with the vignettes, and a clean bright copy despite the imperfections, sympathetically rebound. The work was originally published in 5 parts (at 2 guineas each) from 1840 to 1842, its subsequent publishing history is complicated. However, the advertisment leaf in this copy lists Pelham Richardson as the publisher of both the Portraits and the fourth edition of Wild Sports of Southern Africa: this suggests an issue date of 1844 and is confirmed by the fact that Harris was knighted in June of that year. Abbey Travel 335; Mendelssohn I, pp.688-9; Schwerdt I, p.231; Tooley 247.
