2° (447 x 315mm). Engraved and mounted on guards throughout. Title, two text leaves, index leaf, one double-page map, one double-page plate of university dress, 28 views (2 folding, 26 double page). (Most leaves with repaired tears, many browned and spotted.) CONTEMPORARY LONDON RED MOROCCO BY 'ELIZABETH DICKINSON'S BINDER', covers panelled in gilt with central lozenge, cornerpieces and various small tools, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, centrally placed flower-head tool in each, t.e.g. (Corners scuffed, spine slightly chipped at head and foot, upper joint with 35mm. split). Provenance: Smyth family (armorial bookplate); John Smyth, of Holbeck, West Yorks. (inscriptions).
A FINE LARGE EXAMPLE OF A BINDING FROM THE GREATEST ERA OF BRITISH BINDING, by one of the more shadowy figures of the period.
