OGILBY, John (1600-1676). Britannia: or, the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales, Actually Survey'd. London: for Abel Swall and Robert Morden, 1698.

2° (380 x 260mm). Mounted on guards throughout. Letterpress title, 'To the Reader' leaf, text (pages 1-48). Engraved headpiece at start of text, 100 engraved double-page continuous-strip road-maps by Ogilby. (Some old dampstaining, map 100 creased with a tear in the left-hand margin just affecting the plate area, slight worming to outer blank margins of 6 maps.) Contemporary mottled calf, covers panelled in blind, with the ARMS OF BROWNE WILLIS blocked in gilt at centre of covers (neatly rebacked and recornered, modern enpapers). Provenance: Browne Willis (1682-1760, antiquary, binding).

A later edition of the first published survey of the roads of England and Wales. The provenance is evocative since Willis, in pursuit of his studies, is known to have visited every cathedral in England and Wales (with the exception of Carlisle): it is reasonable to conjecture that his routes were planned using this work. Chubb CIIa; Wing O169.
