4° (267 x 210mm). 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Clark after Wathen, each with tissue guard. (Small tear in lower blank margin of N3, some light offsetting of text onto plates, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf, tooled in gilt and blind (neatly rebacked, old spine laid down). Provenance: Earls of Durham (two armorial bookplates).
FIRST EDITION. Wathen's 'narrative is lively, and his account of eastern life is minute and interesting' (DNB). He was a fast but accurate draughtsman completing up to 20 drawings a day (this earned him the soubriquet 'Jemmy Sketch'). The views in this work comprise: 7 of India; 6 of Malaya or Indonesia; 9 of China and 2 of St.Helena. Abbey Travel II.517.
