No. 1842, Roman hour numerals, Arabic five minute intermarkers, subsidiary seconds and up-and-down dials, fleur-de-lys hour and minute hands, all hands of blued steel, the Government Mark within the seconds dial, top-plate inscribed Charles Frodsham, London with the Government Mark, Earnshaw escapement, Pennington cut bimetallic balance with peripheral screws, blued steel helical balance spring with gallows assembly-stud to which top coil is pinned, spring foot detent (repaired; defective), the movement protected by inner brass drum, brass bowl and gimbal (lacking part of locking arm), in plain three-tier mahogany case, the centre section with rectangular ivory plaque to front inscribed Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand London. This chronometer was purchased by the Greenwich Observatory March 6 1841 and was then issued to H.M. Survey Vessel Wilberforce. It continued in service with the Royal Navy until October 1922 when it was sold to Usher & Cole.
