Lot Essay

Cecil Gould wrote an article about the collecting activities of Samuel Barlow in the March 1966 volume of The Burlington Magazine in which he writes: "It is now possible to identify another purchaser of Impressionists at an early date - Samuel Barlow of Stakehill, Lancashire. He lived from 1825 to 1893, amassed a considerable fortune through his bleach-works and became well-known in Lancashire as a botanist, art-collector and public figure...he owned at least four pictures by Camille Pissarro, five by Fantin-Latour, two by Corot, a Daubigny, and an Harpignies.

"As regards the date of these acquisitions, a Manchester journal, Momus, says in its issue of 31st July 1879 that at Barlow's house at Stakehill, "the walls are covered with pictures and drawings, including a large number of examples of the work of the "Manchester School", of the great French artists whose genius constituted, in some degree, the source from which the members of that school have drawn their inspirations. Surviving receipts give details of the date of acquisition of some of the French pictures. One, from the Manchester dealer W. E. Hamer, dated 1st June 1877, addressed 'S. Barlow, Esq.' is in respect of 'Fruit and Flowers' by Fantin at ¨80. Another, from the same firm, also addressed to Samuel Barlow, is dated 22nd March 1878 and concerns '2 oils by Fantin, White Roses and Spring Flowers' at ¨100 the pair. On 26th August 1881 Barlow paid ¨65 for two further pictures by Fantin." (loc. cit., p. 142).
