Lot Essay

The British sculptor, F. E. McWilliam, was born in 1909 at Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, and studied drawing at the Slade School, working thereafter in Paris. He began to work as a sculptor in 1933 and it was during this period that he met Henry Moore who was to be become a close friend. From the late 1930s McWilliam exhibited with the English Surrealist group at the London Gallery.
