Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Andy Warhol Polaroids (lots 62-67) In 1970, Warhol began taking Polaroid photographs to use for source material for his celebrated portrait paintings. By taking his own pictures with his favorite camera, the Polaroid SX-70 Big Shot, Warhol was able to get the exact image he wanted (and also avoid any potential copyright issues from using other people's images). Previously, Warhol had used found images from magazines and photobooth strips. During a photo session he would take numerous shots, generally frontal and three-quarter views of the sitter's face and upper body and select the images most suitable for his purposes. For example, Untitled (Mick Jagger) appears to have been used for a series of Jagger paintings and prints from 1975.
