Lot Essay

In Francesco Righetti's 1794 catalogue 'Aux amateurs de L'Antiquité et des Beaux Arts', the present pair of bronzes feature as 'Deux Esclaves de Farnese', and were available at a cost of 36 zecchini (Haskell and Penny,op. cit. p.343). The marble originals, which are first recorded in 1544, were in Palazzo Farnese by 1556, and are now in the Museo Nazionale in Naples.
