Lot Essay

Collected in 1929 by consignor from the artist. Maria Martinez began signing her work during the 1920s. During this time, she first used her name exclusively and then later began including Julian's name. While there are not dramatic stylistic changes in Maria's work during the 1920s, it is probable, based on the signature information, that this beautifully balanced and large example dates from the early 1920s.
