Lot Essay

The bold orange quillwork provides a striking contrast to the cream and purple dentate motifs on this early pair of moccasins. They were made during the first part of the 19th century if not slightly earlier and compare somewhat to a Mohawk pair in the Speyer collection (Speyer, 1968, no. 82. See also nos. 78, 80).
