A silver and champlevé enamel Bread and Salt Dish
marked with the initials of assay-master Viktor Savinkov, Moscow, 1876
Shaped circular, the dish with shaped rim with stylized foliate and geometric pan-Slavic designs in vari-color enamel, applied with repoussé and chased simulated cloth, upon which is a trompe-l'oeil repoussé and chased covered cylindrical container imitating a loaf of bread, the hinged cover with a finial of an enamelled salt chair of pan-Slavic design with the Russian adage 'No salt and no bread is only half a meal', marked on base of tray and inside container
