Lot Essay

The arms are those of Scott impaling Surtees, as borne by John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838), an eminent lawyer and staunch Tory. In 1772 he married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Aubone Surtees of Newcastle. Scott was appointed Attorney General in 1794, Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1799, and Lord High Chancellor in 1801, a post which he held until 1827. Of his wife, it was said that "she had not a penny, but she was very beautiful, and to the last hour of her life retained her husband's affections, in spite of her eccentricities." (Complete Peerage)
