Lot Essay

As a favorite pupil and collaborator of Lemoyne, Nonnotte assisted him on many of his important works, including the ceiling of the Salon d'Hercule at the Palace of Versailles. Although he achieved success initially as a history painter, Nonnotte later excelled in the field of portraiture. He was received into the Académie in 1741 on the basis of his portraits of Sébastien Lerclerc and Ulin, and exhibited there regularly until his departure for Lyon in 1754.

The present work was executed in Lyon. He became a member of the Académie in the year of his arrival and assumed the responsibilities of a professor at the école.

In a Louis XV carved giltwood frame.
