Abbema was one of the most popular portrait painters in Paris in the late 19th century, and one of the few women to exhibit at the Salon, winning medals there in 1881, 1900 and 1906. She had a close relationship with Sarah Bernhardt, and exhibited her most famous portrait of the actress in 1816.
