Lot Essay

A charcoal and pencil drawing of this subject with similar white heightening is in the collection of Paul Mellon. The dimensions of the drawing are larger than those of the print (10 1/16 x 14 15/16in); the lithograph was produced from this drawing by some process of transfer.
The drawing and the print bear a copyright line and it seems likely that the print was intended for publication, possibly in Harper's Weekly. This project never came to fruition and this print was never editioned. A small number of proofs were hand-colored by the artist.
