A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN JAR

Of evenly proportioned, ovoid form rising from a ring foot enclosing a recessed base to a thick, upright and cylindrical neck, painted in well-controlled strokes of pale underglaze-blue with four plant groupings balanced on a narrow line, on one side a long-tailed bird flying over a stand of bamboo, on the opposite side a similar bird flying over a flowering plum, and between them two matching stands of flowering pinks and two insects hovering above, the neck also painted in underglaze-blue with a band of sparse foliate scroll and the area just above the foot with another narrow blue line, also covered by a clear glaze of high sheen which ends at the foot, recessed base unglazed
