Lot Essay

Of the 270 prints which Jasper Johns produced between 1960 and 1968, the Ganz Collection originally contained more than 200. Almost all the prints were acquired at the time of publication from ULAE, Simca and Gemini G.E.L. Given the artist's integration of his printmaking into his total artistic output, the prints from the Ganz Collection at one time represented a veritable catalogue raisonn of Johns's artistic output.

It is characteristic of their interest in printmaking that Red, Yellow, Blue (ULAE 14) was the first work of art encountered upon entering the Ganz apartment at Gracie Square. Dating from 1962-63 it depicts the artist's own footprint, a type of self-portraiture shared with other prints and paintings of the same period.
